http://www.amazon.co.uk/Okuma-Opti-Drag-Bait-Feeder-Carp/dp/B0014FXO9E/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1219808315&sr=8-4 would this be a good reel to buy for fishing for carp ,tench, bream, perch, trout and maybe a pike in the later year
oh yes i have a spin cast rod made by kingfisher
also i have the floats that look like thishttp://www.thefloatfactory.co.uk/images/products/floats.jpg but i cant find an eye on them to put my line through where could it be?

I wish it gave more details. It doesn’t say what lb test the line is, it doesn’t tell you what it’s line capacity is, it doesn’t tell you what it’s gear ratio is. They also have the info on the reel facing the other direction so when you zoom in, you can’t see it that way either. And it only has one ball bearing? I just don’t know.

It looks okay from the picture, it comes with an extra spool of line, which is nice, and it says it is intended for carp, so it might be okay. If I were you I would look around a little more though and try to find some place that gave you a little more information.

I don’t think this place delivers to the UK, but I’m going to give you a link to this reel so you can have a basic idea of what specs you should be looking for:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20333&id=0036079120604a&navCount=4&podId=0036079&parentId=cat20333&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20333&hasJS=true

I absolutely love Abu Garcia reels, and one in the C301 model would suit your needs perfectly. So look at those specs and try to see if you can find a place over there that offers a reel similar to that. (Oh, and btw, that price converted into pounds would be 21.74. That would give you a basic idea of how expensive a reel like that might be over there.)

I am sure that reel you are looking at would suit your needs in the beginning, but without knowing the specs on it, I can’t tell you for sure if it would be the best for catching the fish you are targeting or not.

Also, those floats look like slip bobbers. Do they have a hole going all the way through? You would need some bobber stops to place on your line at the depth you would want you line to go down and then slide your line through the middle of the bobber. That way the bobber can slide up and down your line and you can get your line deeper than you can with the traditional still bobber. I like those a lot more, especially when fishing over a sloping shoreline because then the line doesn’t get hung on the retrieve as easily as with the still bobber. They are the best type to use for the fish you are targeting when you actually need a bobber.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

In angling, how do you use a bait runner reel?

I am new to carp fishing, and want to know how to use a shimano bait runner reel that I have just aquired.

cast out, place rod on rod pod /bite alarm turn bait runner on then when fish take bait its free to run and take as much line as needed the tension can be set just like your drag when you pick up your rod either turn handle(bait runner will clip off ) or switch off and then reel in as normal with or with out fish
this is ideal for your bite alarm
tight lines

Would the new Johnson Century reel stand any chance with carp?

I was thinking about buying the Johnson Century reel(If they have it in stock at wal-mart or K-Mart. No other fishing retailer close to me. And don’t have a credit card for cabelas, basspro, etc.) I know my dad has one, which was bought in the 1970′s and it can haul in the fish. I think that spincaster could hold 35-40 lb. fish. I was wondering, do the new Johnson Century’s have enough power to reel in carp? Also, do they sale the model at Wal or K-mart? Here’s the link to the reel…

fill it with 8lb mono. it will handle anything any of your zebcos will handle. nice reel.

Is 1.75lb Test Curve Enough for Pike Fishing?

I reccently bought a rod that I use for trout fishing and ocassionally Carp fishing, its a 12ft carbon rod with a 1.75lb test curve. I have been asked if I would like to go Pike fishing, now I know I have an adaquate reel and line but I am worried that a pike may snap the rod. Obviously I am not after the really big fish but dont want to take a risk. Would 1.75lb be enough for Pike fishing. BTW my rod has both a quiver tip and normal, I would use the normal one obviously but still the rod is not a specemin rod so would it be safe for Pike fishing

I cant see why not, i love to use light tackle and play the fish with it without snapping my leader or the rod, like others have said set the drag on your reel so that the line can easily be pulled off if a big pike comes along, also use a lower poundage hook length than you would normally use as this should snap should a fish quickly jerk. And the last thing is to take your time to play the fish, if it wants to run let it, just keep a little pressure on as you would in fly fishing.

Best reel and rod combo for fresh water fishing?

I’m going fishing and I’m fairly new at it I’ll be fishing at Kentucky lake for mainly bass carp and catfish. And also the best bait for each thanks
And I don’t wanna spend a lot of money on it probably under 150$ is good

Thumbs to JustinTodd, he proves my point. You don’t need expensive gear to catch nice fish. Now all of my current combos are probably valued under $40. That doesn’t make me a bad fisherman. And i also fish for catfish and carp, and occasionally will try bass if i spot one.

My favorite choice would be the Zebco 33. Some people say "It can’t handle big fish! It’s a spincaster." Dude, how could they be so wrong. Why do they think it’s a babies reel? Because of it’s easy way of casting? Please. I know for a fact that the Zebco 33 can handle day in and day out fishing pressure for a LONG time. It will handle good sized carp and catfish, and bass. It’s just a great reel.

If you don’t like spincasters, get the spinning version of the Zebco 33, available at Magic Mart. It’s the same price and stuff, only in a spinning reel version. Now, i would also recommend you changing the line and putting some higher test on there. 14-20 lb. monofilament will do. You MAY want a high quality line if you want it. But I’d just go with cheaper line.

And maybe if you want to get an ugly stik. I don’t have one but i am planning on getting one when i scrap some money together. Actually the Zebco 33 and a medium-action ugly stik (6′ version) would be my perfect set. Good for bass, catfish and carp. Now, that’s a cheap, reliable combo.

Zebco 33 ($20) – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_73160____SearchResults

Shakespeare Ugly Stik ($30) Get the 6′, either 1 or 2 piece. 2 piece is easiest to carry in a car. – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_21814____SearchResults

Berkley Big Game line ($8) (I don’t use this, it just looks like a quality bass, catfish and carp line.) Get the ultra clear 15 lb. line, it looks great – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15127____SearchResults

My favorite bait for catfish would be chicken liver. Problem is, a lot of the catfish come out to be smaller fish when fishing it, and it requires slow casting or a treble hook to get it to the good spot.

For carp, doughball. I used it to catch carps up to 22 inches last year. I never go wrong with doughball.

For bass i have heard live minnows work but i have never tried them. I have though caught some small bass with earthworms/nightcrawlers while fishing for bluegill.

TOTAL : $58 for a quality bass, carp and catfish combo that should do you for a VERY long time.

Do conditions have to be JUST RIGHT to catch a carp with a fly?

I’ve been thinking of fly fishing for carp (Not with a fly-fishing rod and reel but, maybe a spinning rod/reel.) and does the water have to be not too stained or what? What time of the year can you do it? All the time. What is a good kit, or a bunch of good flies for carp. I would really love to go, when the weather warms up.

More than none, all i need is some info about fly fishing for carp. Some of the best flies, the best time, etc.

Thanks to all who answers, and you’re recommendations will definetly be tried out by me, if they aren’t totally stupid, or you say to get a fly-rod which i am not going to do.

I have enough trouble with baitcasters, i don’t need a fly rod!!! (LOL)
Bassplayer, most of the water here were i usually catch GOOD amounts of carp is muddy and/or stained. I have a couple good light-action panfish rods I’ll take, IF i decide to start fishing for them with a fly.

the ones l have seen caught on flies were cruising fish in clear, shallow water. the splash of a float or weight would probably spook them but a small jig casted ahead of feeding fish would work.
just like fishing for bonefish on the flats.
light spinning gear. tackle you would use for trout or crappie
they would be feeding on crayfish and bottom dwelling insects. match your jigs to these. try a brown woolly worm sort of lure.

What is the best kind of baitboat and where can i get ?

My boyfriend wants fishing items for xmas……he does carp fishing (HAS DONE SINCE HE WAS 5 NOW 27) he wants reels x 4 (dawia or shimano) chest waders, some new stainless steel bank sticks x 8, baitboat (viper, microcat) and some new rods (he has these custom made) what are the best makes and does anyone know any fishing shops where i can pay monthly or get credit, i know how expensive all this stuff is and he must have the best!

The best tackle shop in the country

thinking of starting pike fishing what do i need?

i just need to know the basic Equipment and what lures to use and how to rig them up
i do carp fishing so i the basics like rod reel landing net etc
but the carp are ddocile this time of year and pike are a winter fish so iv been told and i hear they put up a good fight

A lot depends on where you live.

Pike are ambush predators. They like to be on the edge of weed beds and brush. Also, underwater structure and abrupt transitions from deep to shallow water.

Live minnows are a better bait than dead ones. Also frogs in season. They eat almost anything, mice and ducklings, any bird that flies too low over the water. Basically anything smaller than they are and smaller means not that much smaller. I have a picture of a muskellunge in a hatchery tank with another one’s tail sticking out of it’s mouth. Plugs, spoons and spinners so long as they’re a good size.

A good 12-24" wire bite guard leader is a must. Also, pike go up to 70 pounds, twenty pounders aren’t unusual. You need a much heavier line than 2lbs test. I’d say 15 to 20 lbs test at least.

Once you go pike, you’ll never go back to carp again.
