Pier fishing with carop rod?

I have a zebco carp fishing rod which was bought from argos, it is a 12ft rod with a test curve of 2.7hlb.

I was woundering weather i could use it to fish for mackeral off of admiralty peir in dover?
In other words could i use it for peir fishing?
Also what size line should i use?

hi there just caught 14 mackerel yesterday, would have been one more if an otter didn’t grab it, little tyke,
I have my line set with 30lb line as the coast area I fish is very rough ground, and likely to get snagged up even just fishing for mackerel however going round to some other grounds I change down to my 15lb mono, good enough with up to 5 mackerel on it.
As above though make sure you rinse the reel off in fresh water as the sea can rot it pretty quickly, a basic oil or spray oil is absolutely fine.
go get em they are tasty tasty very very tasty they’re very tasty ;-)

  • i say that man there:

i use a 11ft spinning rod (ed schliffke) 5 hook 1/0 shrimp trace with 2oz lead for mackerel works perfect the rods are more or less identical
i’ve had a full trace of mackerel on what a fight loved it.
    edit:
the trace is made of 20lb line
because i use it for spinning too i have a 20lb leader on 10lb mainline

Mackerel? Definitely. I think you could handle mackerel and then some with that carp rod. Heck, i could bring a Zebco 33 to the salt if i wanted to. Just be sure, after every saltwater fishing trip with a freshwater rod, grease it, clean it, oil it, make sure everything is alright. Saltwater will brake down the gears in a freshwater reel.

    Happy fishing.
