On here you will get a lot of answers from the other side of the Atlantic that ain't going to help.
Rather that try to explain things in to much detail or advise you to go to web sites , go to a tackle shop and explain what you need and tell them what your budget is , if you take the boy's along they will get advice on tackling up for different situations, and advice in angling is an on going thing.
One thing you can be sure of , if they get into fishing in a big way you will never be at Alysss as to what to get for birthdays and
Christmas (most tackle shops do gift vouchers )
References :
Everyone has their own way of fishing and use different types of poles and reels. I have an ugly-stik that I have used everywhere, salt and fresh. It is a 6 foot rod and I use it in lakes, streams, rivers, ponds, ocean, off of boats, and off the rocks, and the beach and I catch just as many (if not more) fish than most people.
References :
i fish alot for all types of fish from sunfish to sharks and there is one rod you can relie on it is the ugly stick. now let me tell you carp get over 100 popunds sometimes so there are 2 rods you should get. for the bottem fishing you should get a 8ft rod it will help you get the fish off the bottem once you hook them, then a 7ft rod for the float fishing it will give you more agility for casting. when it comes to the reels any reel 30 dollars or higher will be fine and make sure its a spinning reel because baitcasters are verry verry hard for beginners. with the rod, reel and 25lb line you will have no trouble getting the fish, but dont let the fish burn youre drag to much because you will have to buy a new reel if it does. have fun
References :
I'm assuming you don't want to spend the earth because boys can be pretty fickle with their hobbies! I've suggested a couple of rods below that will do the trick beautifully. A feeder rod is more or less the same thing as a leger rod. Reels are rather less specialist than rods, so a pair of the one I have also suggested below could be used interchangeably on each rod (I don't work for Castaway Tackle by the way)! Alternatively, you may want to buy them a reel with a bait runner facility to use with the feeder rod (the name baitrunner is patented, so you may well hear it called something else like bite & run etc but it's all the same thing). Carp anglers like this kind of reel as it has a second clutch that allows the fish to take line off the reel without pulling the rod into the lake.

Don't buy an all glass fibre rod, even if you can find one. They are hopelessly out of date. Carbon fibre is the material to go for. Forget spinning on carp lakes by the way. It won't go down at all well.

I'm assuming the boys have some idea how to set up their tackle. If you plan to buy them some line, I recommend 5lb test for the float rod and 8 lb for the feeder rod.

I could (and frequently do) go on for ages about setups, but will leave it at that unless you post any secondary questions. When you go into the tackle shop don't be afraid to ask questions. I don't think it's at all likely that you will get ripped off, and as for looking blonde, well most blokes like blondes (and you sound like the kind of mum most boys would love to have)!....

Good shopping.

Get them into Sea fishing and I can help. All fresh water fish are ugly and want to bite you lol.

Couple of my mates use this site for their fresh water tackle they have some good advise on there too. If in doubt just ring either this tackle place or any other you come across and they will be glad to help. For some reason tackle shop owners tend to be really nice guys???
