What fishing rod/reel combo should i get my dad?
My dad loves the sport of fishing as much as i do, but his money is very low. He owns only 2 rods and reels, which he uses for carp, suckers and catfish. Both reel/rods are very old, one being the Zebco 33 combo, and the other a Johnson Century combo. I have talked with him about getting him a good rod/reel because, he has always been there for me … I don’t know why i didn’t get him another one years ago …
ok, here’s what he likes .
1.) Spincasters. He likes spinning reels, and dreadfully hates baitcasters, as a joke he said he would buy out every baitcasting company and burn all their reels! LMAO … He said he would want a spincaster, also I’m about 90% in on getting a spincasting outfit, and the other 10 on a spinning combo.
2.) He doesn’t like a long rod. 6′ is big enough, as he puts it. Easy to carry, and transport. If 6’6 is available it will be alright also.
3.) He fishes for carp, catfish and suckers as said.
4.) The combo should cost less than 45 bucks, and can be bought from Wal-Mart.
5.) And his favorite brands are Zebco, Johnson and Abu Garcia.
He swears by the old 33′s, and says that the new ones are not nearly as good … You think the Platinum series 33 would be any better than the Authentic one?
Thanks to all.
the platinum would be a great one. match it up with a nice ugly stick.
but l know you’re going to do that, anyway.

you should try dicks sporting goods i went there 2 weeks ago and got a 50$ rod i already had a reel for it, but you can get a good median action rod and reel for 50 dollars if you buy them as a combo(already attached) plus the people there are nice they gave me this booklet of all the lakes in the county it also said what kind of fish there are in each lake and if you can rent a boat i would consider yourself luck i love to fish, but my dad doesn’t

Your Dad is correct about the old 33′s. They just don’t make them like they use to. In fact, a "decent" spincasting reel is hard to find these days…..there is only a few worth purchasing and they are well out of your budget.
I know you like spincasting outfit’s, but for the occasional big Catfish and Carp I’d def want the best drag system you could purchase.
(You never know when you’ll hook into a monster; a big Cat or Carp could easily make "mince-meat" of a cheap spin-caster’s gears & drag.)
For those reasons, I would buy him a Spinning reel. Even a cheap spinning reel will generally last longer & be better built than today’s spincasting reel, (which are made from the cheapest pot-metal from China).
In this economy most people can’t afford to purchase "throw-away" reels & rods that work for 6-8 months and break, (or bust the moment you catch a fish bigger than 8-10LB’s).
I’ve looked and this is what I’ve found that’s close to your budget-
I just purchased one of these in the baitcasting version and it is a CRAZY good deal for $20. I know you want stuff you can only purchase at Walmart but this is WORTHY- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=cat21406_feat&id=0043143121685a&navCount=2&podId=0043143&parentId=cat21428&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=OG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&hasJS=true
You know how much I like Walmart (growl…lol), but here’s a couple things I’ve found on their website that might interest you- http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10355712

If your Walmart does not have these in stock you can order them at the store and they will probably ship them TO your store within a couple days.
You should think about going to your local Mom & Pop store and seeing if they can come close to matching the Walmart deals. I’d rather support my local US tackle shop than China.
Hope this gives ya some ideas? See ya Bro……
