In angling, how do you use a bait runner reel?

I am new to carp fishing, and want to know how to use a shimano bait runner reel that I have just aquired.

cast out, place rod on rod pod /bite alarm turn bait runner on then when fish take bait its free to run and take as much line as needed the tension can be set just like your drag when you pick up your rod either turn handle(bait runner will clip off ) or switch off and then reel in as normal with or with out fish
this is ideal for your bite alarm
tight lines

When you have cast out and placed your rod on your pod/rod rest. There is a arm on the back of your reel you put to the down position, so that the line can be taken when a fish is running. When you strike pick the rod up and put the arm to the up position and play the fish.
