Best reel and rod combo for fresh water fishing?
I’m going fishing and I’m fairly new at it I’ll be fishing at Kentucky lake for mainly bass carp and catfish. And also the best bait for each thanks
And I don’t wanna spend a lot of money on it probably under 150$ is good
Thumbs to JustinTodd, he proves my point. You don’t need expensive gear to catch nice fish. Now all of my current combos are probably valued under $40. That doesn’t make me a bad fisherman. And i also fish for catfish and carp, and occasionally will try bass if i spot one.
My favorite choice would be the Zebco 33. Some people say "It can’t handle big fish! It’s a spincaster." Dude, how could they be so wrong. Why do they think it’s a babies reel? Because of it’s easy way of casting? Please. I know for a fact that the Zebco 33 can handle day in and day out fishing pressure for a LONG time. It will handle good sized carp and catfish, and bass. It’s just a great reel.
If you don’t like spincasters, get the spinning version of the Zebco 33, available at Magic Mart. It’s the same price and stuff, only in a spinning reel version. Now, i would also recommend you changing the line and putting some higher test on there. 14-20 lb. monofilament will do. You MAY want a high quality line if you want it. But I’d just go with cheaper line.
And maybe if you want to get an ugly stik. I don’t have one but i am planning on getting one when i scrap some money together. Actually the Zebco 33 and a medium-action ugly stik (6′ version) would be my perfect set. Good for bass, catfish and carp. Now, that’s a cheap, reliable combo.

Shakespeare Ugly Stik ($30) Get the 6′, either 1 or 2 piece. 2 piece is easiest to carry in a car. – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_21814____SearchResults
Berkley Big Game line ($8) (I don’t use this, it just looks like a quality bass, catfish and carp line.) Get the ultra clear 15 lb. line, it looks great – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15127____SearchResults
My favorite bait for catfish would be chicken liver. Problem is, a lot of the catfish come out to be smaller fish when fishing it, and it requires slow casting or a treble hook to get it to the good spot.
For carp, doughball. I used it to catch carps up to 22 inches last year. I never go wrong with doughball.
For bass i have heard live minnows work but i have never tried them. I have though caught some small bass with earthworms/nightcrawlers while fishing for bluegill.
TOTAL : $58 for a quality bass, carp and catfish combo that should do you for a VERY long time.
I don’t know if it’s the best……but for a good all around combo I would recommend a St. Croix Avid rod (6’6”) teamed up with a Shimano Symmetry reel. If you like baitcasters you can’t go wrong with a Shimano Curado.
For $150 I’d get a St. Croix Triumph rod with a Shimano Sahara reel.
As far as bait:
Bass: crankbaits and plastics
Carp: corn, worms, dough balls
Catfish: worms, stinkbait, liver, shrimp, shad
Good luck.

Stick with Shimano.
For a lower price point spinning setup go for a Compre Rod with a Symetre Reel. If you have the money, step up to a Crucial Rod with a Stradic Reel.
Stick with the same rods for baitcasting. Shimano Curado for the lower price point, but if you have the money, get yourself a chronarch. The anti rust bearings make for a lifelong reel.
Don’t be fooled by the number of bearings on the reel. It doesn’t matter if that Daiwa POS reel has 12 bearings, it won’t be as smooth for as long as the shimano.

hey man, you dont need to spend a pile of money on a rod and reel combo to get quality. especially if you are new to the whole fishing game. there is no need to drop a lil fortune on something that you may or may not like. i would suggest that you go up to your local walley world and get a zebco 33 classic rod and reel combo or a zebco rino rod and reel combo. l depending on where you go you should only pay between 35-50 dollars each combo. these reels are good reels and both are high in quality and will give you years of good fishin. if you are bound and determined to spend a pile of money i would suggest a Phlugher presidential series reel (about 65 dollars) and a shakespear ugly stick (about 35 dollars) that is the set up that i use it is a great set up never had a problem with them. pulled up fish from lil sun fish up to a 6 foot black tip shark. man i hope this helps you a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

hope this helps you out a bit on your search. just remember you dont have to drop a pile of money to get high quality. good fishin
hey and for the bait. since you are starting out i would recomend starting off simple. i would start with live bait fished under a bobber. worms, crickets, minnows. around this time i would recomend using minnows. if you are not wanting to use live bait i would use a simple spinner like a rooster tail or a beetle spin. very simple to use very inexpensive and very effective.
beetle spin lure ( i like the ones that are either white with a white dot or a black body with lil green legs.) there are all differnet bodies for all different applications. finding the one that is for you is all in experiementation

rooster tail ( i like the red ones and the white ones too)

Reels are tools. There has never been a better made one than the original Garcia 300, Garcia-Mitchell 3000, or the Zebco Cardinal 4. Everything on the market today is designed for failure, and obsolescence. Any of these are found on eBay. Ugly sticks are fine rods. Combine this advice, and you are in business for $25. If you know tools, all the above reels are akin to an old worm drive Skilsaw. They last forever, and do the job like a "tool" should.
