Tricks and Tips for Catching Flatheads?

I recently got into cat fishing just for the fight. I did an all nighter at a local river. I know there are flatheads and channels in there. My buddy and I caught 30 channels all around 25-30 inches on chicken livers. I have friends that caught some monster flatheads that are almost as tall as them. There is an old canal the runs parallel to the river. You can fish either side but I fish the river. There is a big dam and lots of places to fish along with shore. People usually have bonfires going. What are some tips and tricks to catching these monster flats? I plan on buying two rods just for this. I heard flats like fast moving water and prefer live bait. I don’t really know how to find these deep pools where they like to lay. What type of tackle should I purchase? What size hooks, line etc. Is there a rig I use? I also was told catfish don’t like the feeling of weight so I usually use a sliding sinker.

I’m primarily a bass fishermen, along with muskie, carp, walleye and trout. So this is new to me and I really want to learn more about it and get into it. Any help is much appreciated. I plan on going out this Friday with a few friends for another all nighter.

no, flatheads do not like fast moving water. you will find them at night cruising the shoreline in calmer water. but they DO prefer live bait. shad, bluegill even small bullheads.
during the day, find deeper pools of quiet water just outside the current like scour holes behind jetties or pilings. the first one or two deep holes below the dam are likely spots. particularly in the winter when big cats pile up in those spots waiting for hand outs from the dam’s turbines.
this time of year, also search out smaller feeder creeks and rivers. the most tree filled, deep (relative term… may only be 4 feet deep) holes on the outside of turns and washed out banks full of roots are great spots to locate big flatheads.

hang a couple limb lines at night with just enough line to allow your live bait to submerge only 6 inches. use the heavy 100lb nylon braid from a hardware store with a 5/0 to 8/0 circle hook. no weight. tie it to a strong flexible branch or sapling.

Smart Wife!?

A man called home to his wife and said: "Honey I have been asked to go fishing over in Ireland with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting so could you please pack enough clothes for a week and put out my rod and tackle box? We’re leaving from the office and I’ll drop by the house to pick my things up. Oh! Please pack my new blue silk pajamas."

The wife thinks this sounds a bit fishy but being the goo d wife she did exactly what her husband asked.

The following weekend he came home a little tired but otherwise looking good. The wife welcomed him home and asked if he caught many fish? He said, "Yes! Lots of Salmon, some trout, and a few carp. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?

You’ll love the answer……..

The wife replied, " I did. They’re in your tackle box…"
