Pellets
Hi Guys,i have now had a couple of trips out and caught a few small carp,i was wondering about
trying Pellets as a loose feed as i have just been useing boilies. My question is do i have to use a Pellet Pump to make them sink or do the sinking Pellets sink by themselves,i know this will sound like a daft question, but if they sink by themselves why do people use a pump.
Thanks Tony.

Im new to carp fishing and……?
wondering if people could give me some advice on some equipment to get and possibly if your kind enough to even spare me some tackle as i was out night fishing last weekend and had nearly all my tackle stolen, it wasnt much but it was worth alot to me as i have only been fishing a month or even if anybody knows of websites that give away free tackle when you register etc.
will be very gratefull to all contributers
Best to stick to the basics, stick to 1 carp rod,1 carp reel,a bite alarm(you can buy cheap gear these days just pop into your local tackleshop just ask instore just ask the staff) strong line 10pound in strength as a start, stick to 1 good hook pattern, esp hooks are good ie Raptors in size 10 for winter fishing and 6 or 8 for summer fishing plus it might be better to buy barbless hooks as they are easier to take out once fish is on the bank.plus buy a cheap alarm, fox international sell plenty for all budgets(available in tackle shops). When it comes to bait i’d stick to one boilie.mainline activ 8 is one of the best baits size 15mm ive ever used(available in tackleshops)for rigs its probably best to buy a carp magazine like Total Carp from Wh smiths plus there is so many tips no matter what your budget is. Trust me reading about carp fishing is the way i learnt and you can do this at your own pace, wherever you are.Plus buy a unhooking mat to put carp on no matter what the size when you have it on the bank it might flap around and causes itself an injury.but as the mat is soft its safer. never lift a carp high off the ground either to photo it.always keep it low to the ground.Carp safety is most important of all things. As Ive said though reading is the cheapest way to learn about carp fishing monthly mags will keep you informed
first time carp fishing?
never fished before, what do i need for carp fishing
i am about to buy
a carp rod and reel
a landing net
a unhooking mat
a rod rest
a bite alarm
barbless hooks
a licence
anything else i need like weights or ?????????
If I was you I would purchase the R2F Southbend all species fishing combo. It only cost 16 dollars and you get a tackle box with lures, plastics, hooks, weights, swivels, and a stringer. However you will need to supplement that tackle box with some treble hooks ,salmon egg hooks,a pocket knife, and pliers. All of that should cost you $.69,$.69,$3.99, and $.99 if you buty it at walmart or big r.
As for bait worms, bread, dough, boilies work well. You can also flyfish if you want. The basic set up is the egg sinker set up.
What are specimen, specialist and stalker fishing rods?
What are each used for and how do they differ from normal carp or float rods?
Specimen & Specialist rods are beefed up rods for catching the biggest possible species of a particular fish… the most common target species being Carp, Pike, Barbel, Chub & Tench.
They come in a variety of "Test Curves", most commonly….
1.25lb TC = usually an "Avon" style rod, used for specimen chub fishing on big rivers but can also be used for Barbel fishing & carp up to about 25lb but still sensitive enough to fish for Roach, Tench, Perch & Bream + as a heavy duty feeder rod. One of the most versatile rods you can own (and one day I even hope to be able to afford to buy one finally).
1.5lb / 1.75lb / 2lb TC = Usually a beefed up Avon style rod, or light carp rod & mainly used for specimen barbel fishing on Rivers (especially when it’s in flood, or there’s some really bad snags to contend with) + Carp fishing where casting as far as possible isn’t necessary.
2.25lb / 2.5lb / 2.75lb = Usually exactly the same as a Carp or Pike rod but called a specimen / Specialist rod instead of a "Carp Rod" or "Pike Rod" to imply they can be used for both.
3lb / 3.25lb / 3.5lb / 3.75lb / 4lb TC = Usually a very powerful Carp / Pike style specimen rod (almost more like a beachcasting rod) for extreme long range carp fishing, baiting with a "spod", or fishing for HUGE catfish (usually the "Wels Catfish").
Stalker rod = usually a shortened version of a carp rod (e.g. 8 – 10ft instead of the usual 12ft) used for stalking carp in awkward spots, and casting to any you happen to spot…. kinda like the approach often used in "A Passion for Angling" or on John Wilson’s "Go Fishing".
Fishing Gear Help Please – xmas present?
Hi everyone,
please can you help me with xmas present for my boyfriend? He would love to start fishing as a hobby so i thought i would surprise him and buy him a rod, a reel and some necessary bits to start with. So i went on few websites but got very confused. All kinds of rods and reels for each fish, then all in different brands, etc.
Fish in our waters around (rivers, ponds,NOT sea) are mostly Bass, Carp, Trout, Pike, also sometimes Catfish, Silverfish, Whitefish, Eel, Zope.
So please could you recommend me something that is suitable generally for most fish and what brand is good too.(preferably telescopic rod if it`s good)
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you.
I agree with Brook.
A 7′, 2 piece, spinning outfit would be your best bet. DON’T purchase a telescopic rod! They have a tendency to break at the WORST times; like when you have the "fish of a lifetime" hooked up! Stay away from Telescopic rods they are the…..uh…..K-mart brand "Tube-top" of the fishing world! (lol-it’s true!)
Here are some brands you want to look for: Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger.
Here are some suggestions for an outfit.
Budget Spinning Outfit’s
1. "Pflueger, President" spinning reel ($59.99) model 6735X matched to a 7′, medium-action, "Ugly Stik Lite", ($39.99). You can catch most any freshwater fish with this combo. Ugly Stik rods work well as a "begginer rod" because of the outstanding durability; however, they lack "sensitivity" which can be VERY important in Bass & Trout fishing.
Pflueger President reels are excellent entry level reels and have more features (and are "smoother") than reels twice as expensive!
2. "Shimano, Symetre" spinning reel ($59.99) model SY1500FI matched to a "Shimano, Compre" 6′ 6", model CPS-66M 2B, rod ($89). Another budget rod & reel combo that can catch all that you’ve requested to catch. Symetre reels are a bargain at $59, (they only recently dropped the price from $79 like 3 weeks ago!!!), but, I still think the Plfueger President is still "slightly" better.
You CAN get a cheaper combo, but the odds your gonna get a "lemon" raise significantly when you shop for a fishing outfit below the price tag of these 2 combo’s I’ve listed, (around $100). Be careful!
How much is your BF worth? (lol)
You want to BLOW his mind (and your pocket book) ? Get him something nicer, (such as):
1. "Pflueger, Supreme" ($99), "Shimano, Stradic MgFB" ($229), "Team Daiwa, Fuego" ($279), "Shimano, Sustain" ($249) REEL.
Matched to any G-Loomis, St. Croix Legend/Avid, Kistler, Cabelas Magtouch, e21 Classic Gold Carrot Stix, ROD.
These are some of the finest rods & reels you can purchase. And believe it or not, there ARE some even MORE expensive. But, as a begginer, anything over these would be "overkill".
Worried I might be steering you wrong?
Go to http://www.cabelas.com for reviews and info on these fishing outfit’s I’ve mentioned. OR http://www.basspro.com
Hope this helps? Good luck with your purchase!
PS- As for lures and terminal tackle- I’d "hold off" on buying any tackle. You don’t really know what type of fish he wants to target and each fish has different "stuff" you could purchase. You could spend FAR MORE on lures to fill up a tackle box than any 1 fishing outfit, (esp if he decides to strictly go the Bass/Pike/Trout direction)!
HOWEVER, due get him some line. Suggestions?
Power Pro 6/20 (green color) or Berkley Fireline (smoke color) 4/10.

Whats A good bait for carp fishing?
Also whats a good method, I’ve never fished for carp
It all depends on where you’re fishing for them……. in the UK & Europe, they’re heavily fished for, so can be quite difficult to catch… so a whole host of crafty techniques & baits have been developped…… a common bait is "boilies" (I believe BERKLEY and several other companies make off the shelf versions) mounted on a device called a "hair rig"… where instead of putting bait directly on the hook, it’s threaded onto a loop of line that stands just off the hook and held in place with a special stopper (or you can use a piece of grass instead).
In North America (US & Canada), they tend to be overlooked…… not as popular a target…… so they’re slightly easier to catch…. things like Breadcrust, Worms & Sweetcorn will work just fine for them.
For tackle, you’ll need a pretty powerful rod…… in the UK & Europe, specialist Carp rods with a "test curve" between 1.25lb – 2.75lb+ are used…. though if I remember correctly, a suggested alternative for travelling with is a 9-10ft heavy spinning rod.
Also, you’ll need a Reel that holds plenty of 12lb line, otherwise they’ll just snap you off…. and of course the Reel must match the rod in terms of balance (e.g. feels right).
For hooks, you’ll need at least a Size8
One of the most fun methods for catching carp is "stalking" for them…. especially on a warm day, and the water is pretty clear… instead of waiting for the fish to come to you, you go looking for the fish (this is where a pair of Polarised Sunglasses + a small pair of 8×21 Binoculars come in handy)….. once you find them, try freelining a bait to them (no weight on the line apart from a hook tied direct to the reel line + the bait).

Hi all, a question for you. If you were going to fish a lake and the owner told you that everybody uses Cranberry and Caviar would you use that bait because the fish are used to it or would you use something else i.e. a different flavor, luncheon meat, corn etc as they might like a change? Thanks for your help. Sorry I forgot to spell check.

Light tackle question for fishing.?
Can someone give me advice on landing carp upto 15lbs on a drennan series 7 11ft Waggler rod and 6lb main line/8lb at a push. My main concern is the rod going to be able to handle a Carp at this weight? I don’t want it to snap. Also tips on playing hard fighting carp on this tackle, drag or anti reverse while playing the fish? many thanks.
use your drag, play the fish carefully and hold the rod up so that it acts as a cushion for any violent moves the fish makes
