What Do I Need to Buy to Start Carp Fishing?

When you start out Carp fishing you are going to need spend some money as Carp fishing requires some kit. Here is a brief guide on Carp fishing set up for beginners. Start with a light kit using the stalking method, but most will want to start in the most common way by using a two or three static rod system.

You can build a setup from scratch or buy a ready made Carp fishing kit available from suppliers.

Rods You can get very good quality Carp fishing rods these days. As a beginner a 12ft 2.5lb rod is ideal, you don’t want to be starting off  with casting rods, an all action Through Rod will be best.

Reels For beginners a free spool reel, better known as bait runner reel, is probably ideal and the easiest to get used to.  This will let the fish run off with the bait so you won’t have to go in the water to retrieve your rod.

Bite Alarm You will also need a bite alarm as these are invaluable visual and audible indicators of bites. Look for ones with a volume control so you can turn the volume down.

Rod Supports Stainless steel banksticks will do the job nicely, it is best to avoid aluminium ones as they tend to bend and suffer from oxidization. It is worth considering screw in banksticks, as they are easier to get in to the ground in dry bank conditions.

Line and Rigs You can easily get excellent quality fishing line at low cost; you should be looking for about a 12lb line. This is just about right for a beginner. The size and shape of the hooks will be dependent on the design of the rig you are using. You can make your own Carp rigs or buy Carp fishing rigs off the shelf.

Landing Nets and Unhooking Mats There is a wide range of landing nets to choose from. A good quality one is an essential part of the Carp angler’s kit, not only to make things easier for you but also for the welfare of the fish. Nets with a coarse mesh will damage the fish, lifting scales and damaging the mucus protecting the fish. You should use a fine mesh landing net to reduce the possibility of damaging the fish; you may also find that it is a rule at the fishing venue. For the same reasons a good quality unhooking mat is essential and will also be required by the fishing venue.

Bite Indicators There is mixed opinion on whether a bite indicator is required, but they really can help you as they give an indication on what the fish is doing with the bait. Get one.

Homemade Carp Fishing Bait Recipe

Homemade Carp fishing bait is easily made and will save you money as you won’t be paying for the manufactured boilies that are available. Also your homemade Carp bait will be far more appealing to the Carp fish, as it will smell and taste much nicer to the Carp. Therefore using your own Carp bait, you will have far more success landing Carp, and this will make you fishing much more enjoyable. You will then find that catching more and larger Carp within your capabilities.

I’ve been using some recipes from this downloadable e-book Homemade Carp Bait Recipes it helps beginners and experienced anglers alike, to improve their baits achieving far greater catches of big Carp.

Here is one Carp fishing bait recipe you can use, it is easy and to cheap make and can be prepared a day or two ahead of your fishing trip. I have used this recipe and variations of it very successfully over a number of years; you can even vary the ingredients and come up with your own unique recipe. Remember the trick is to make the bait appealing to the fish and they just love smelly, sticky and tasty bait, and if your tastes really good the chances are the Carp will go for it. Give this one a try and don’t forget you can add you own ideas to this one.

1x can Creamed Corn (you can substitute this with creamed soup)

2x table spoons peanut butter

3-4 packets of Instant Grits (I find the cheese flavour very effective)

2x table spoon chopped garlic

2x table spoon Strawberry jelly

1x box of instant mashed potato

Pour the Creamed Corn into a bowl, mix in the peanut butter, Instant Grits, garlic and Strawberry jelly. Add the instant mashed potato slowly until the mix forms a dough. If the dough is too dry add some water, or even better some soda (Cola or 7Up). If it becomes too wet add more instant mash or flour.Put this mix in to the refrigerator and leave over night. I’ve found Carp love this one, give it a go, you can add your own ingredients if you like.

Catfish / carp fishing bait tips?

My friend and I are going fishing at a pond that has carp and catfish and I would like to know which bait to use. Normally we use nightcrawlers ,but I have heard that the bigger catfish won’t take them ? Other baits I have heard of are shrimp in vanilla extract and corn. The pond is not a natural pond but manmade and about 4 acres of water.

Having tried almost everything for channel cats the best results have always been cut bait for me. Some swear by frogs, but, those lines never produce as well in my experience.

What is the story behind your fishing gear?

One of my fondest rod and reel is the hess fishing rod and reel combo that I found abandoned at the pond I fished at. I had lost one the other day to a carp that dragged it underwater , because I forgot to secure my fishing rod. I came back the next day hoping that I would float to shore , but I found an abadoned fishinf rod. I have caught many fish with that rod

My fondest story about a rod and reel? I actually came back with the best memory Wednesday night. I came back with my dad’s tackle box and fishing rod; Abu-matic 170 on a Olympic 3350 2mf rod ( not really sure, hard to read.) He passed away on May 12 but man, did he love this set up he had. Anyways, here’s the story;
He was sitting on a chair on the edge of the shore line. He just casted out the line and yelled at us, " don’t bother me ‘cuz I’m after a big one." We just sat there looking at him like he was crazy. He fell asleep and that’s when we set up our devious plan. My brother went into the lake and followed out the line. We staged up around him to wake my dad really fast and get him confused for a second. As soon as we screamed out, " Dad you got a bite, it’s a big one!" My dad jumps up all confused. My brother takes the line and dives down and pulls the line. My dad is all excited and screaming for a net and fighting the "fish" hard for all he’s worth. My brother pops his head up out of the water holding the line and my dad just stood there trying to figure out what happened. He looked at us and started laughing his butt off because he knew we got him. That is the fondest memory of any rod and reel I have even for a moment because he handled that dinky set up like it was an extension of himself and I knew it would be that way always. Now I’m looking at it and wondering if I can ever be as good as him and scared to touch the thing because I’m expecting him to yell at me. LOL. That’s the best I have to offer as far as your question goes because none of the new gear or old I have comes close to that one rod and reel my dad loved so much…not yet anyways.; ) ~good luck catchin.

Can Someone help me with Carp Fishing?

I Have just brought All The Gear To Start Carp fishing (Rods,Rod Pods,Bivvy,Bight Alarms) but No Line Hooks Weights Etc)
But i have never fished for carp before and fancied a change in fishing.
So Can Anyone Help me with setting up the rod
like what type of line and the weight of it will i need what hooks what what weights and how to set it up. or can anyone tell me a good website witch shows me how to do it all.
many thanks in advance

Type of line – Get monofilament it’s cheap, strong and works anywhere. Something around 14 or 15 lb. test will do fine. That’s normally what i use.

Hook – I found that a size 2 baitholder hook works the best for carp. I use those cheap little $2 packs of them at wal mart. I think the brand that makes them is renegade. You should find a pack. They usually have them in stock all the time.

Sinkers/weights – I usually just use split shots because of slow moving water, the easyness of taking them on/taking them off, and because i don’t need a huge weight when the doughball on my hook is pretty heavy. I guess if fishing with a heavy duty fishing pole or with fast moving water you use sliding sinkers.

Here is a pretty good beginner carp fishing website – http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/Carp-Fishing-Articles/Beginners_Carp_Guide_1.html

okay carp bait for united states fishing?

whats a good recipe for carp bait? im fishing for big mouth bufflo carp. big ones. i wanna try and clean them out of this pond.

Why clean them out of the pond? Don’t kill them unless you are eating them. Put them in a local creek. I love carp. They fight great. But seriously dude don’t kill them unless someone is making you.

My favorite is a dough bait made of peanut butter, cinnamon, maple syrup, and bread. Steal the recipe if you want.

Happy fishing.
