What Do I Need to Buy to Start Carp Fishing?
When you start out Carp fishing you are going to need spend some money as Carp fishing requires some kit. Here is a brief guide on Carp fishing set up for beginners. Start with a light kit using the stalking method, but most will want to start in the most common way by using a two or three static rod system.
You can build a setup from scratch or buy a ready made Carp fishing kit available from suppliers.
Rods You can get very good quality Carp fishing rods these days. As a beginner a 12ft 2.5lb rod is ideal, you don’t want to be starting off with casting rods, an all action Through Rod will be best.
Reels For beginners a free spool reel, better known as bait runner reel, is probably ideal and the easiest to get used to. This will let the fish run off with the bait so you won’t have to go in the water to retrieve your rod.
Bite Alarm You will also need a bite alarm as these are invaluable visual and audible indicators of bites. Look for ones with a volume control so you can turn the volume down.
Rod Supports Stainless steel banksticks will do the job nicely, it is best to avoid aluminium ones as they tend to bend and suffer from oxidization. It is worth considering screw in banksticks, as they are easier to get in to the ground in dry bank conditions.
Line and Rigs You can easily get excellent quality fishing line at low cost; you should be looking for about a 12lb line. This is just about right for a beginner. The size and shape of the hooks will be dependent on the design of the rig you are using. You can make your own Carp rigs or buy Carp fishing rigs off the shelf.
Landing Nets and Unhooking Mats There is a wide range of landing nets to choose from. A good quality one is an essential part of the Carp angler’s kit, not only to make things easier for you but also for the welfare of the fish. Nets with a coarse mesh will damage the fish, lifting scales and damaging the mucus protecting the fish. You should use a fine mesh landing net to reduce the possibility of damaging the fish; you may also find that it is a rule at the fishing venue. For the same reasons a good quality unhooking mat is essential and will also be required by the fishing venue.
Bite Indicators There is mixed opinion on whether a bite indicator is required, but they really can help you as they give an indication on what the fish is doing with the bait. Get one.
Homemade Carp Fishing Bait Recipe
Homemade Carp fishing bait is easily made and will save you money as you won’t be paying for the manufactured boilies that are available. Also your homemade Carp bait will be far more appealing to the Carp fish, as it will smell and taste much nicer to the Carp. Therefore using your own Carp bait, you will have far more success landing Carp, and this will make you fishing much more enjoyable. You will then find that catching more and larger Carp within your capabilities.
I’ve been using some recipes from this downloadable e-book Homemade Carp Bait Recipes it helps beginners and experienced anglers alike, to improve their baits achieving far greater catches of big Carp.
Here is one Carp fishing bait recipe you can use, it is easy and to cheap make and can be prepared a day or two ahead of your fishing trip. I have used this recipe and variations of it very successfully over a number of years; you can even vary the ingredients and come up with your own unique recipe. Remember the trick is to make the bait appealing to the fish and they just love smelly, sticky and tasty bait, and if your tastes really good the chances are the Carp will go for it. Give this one a try and don’t forget you can add you own ideas to this one.
1x can Creamed Corn (you can substitute this with creamed soup)
2x table spoons peanut butter
3-4 packets of Instant Grits (I find the cheese flavour very effective)
2x table spoon chopped garlic
2x table spoon Strawberry jelly
1x box of instant mashed potato
Pour the Creamed Corn into a bowl, mix in the peanut butter, Instant Grits, garlic and Strawberry jelly. Add the instant mashed potato slowly until the mix forms a dough. If the dough is too dry add some water, or even better some soda (Cola or 7Up). If it becomes too wet add more instant mash or flour.Put this mix in to the refrigerator and leave over night. I’ve found Carp love this one, give it a go, you can add your own ingredients if you like.

Buy a Shimano Baitrunner Reel
Shimano rule the carp fishing reel world with their Baitrunner reel. The Shimano Baitrunner is the best on the market; they have been producing gearing products for years, most notably bicycle gears. The Baitrunner I own has seen several years of service and has been under water, had ground bait all over it, been covered fish slime and has barely been cleaned and it still work perfectly.
All the Baitrunner models are excellent and you can certainly depend on them, they are good for freshwater fishing such as fishing for Carp, and are also good for sea water fishing. The Baitrunner series also come in a range that also includes some very affordable model s. These reels are also excellent for use from the shore and for fishing from a boat.
The Baitrunners have spool thumbing, this makes it easy to place your lure exactly into the position you want. The Baitrunner really is a dream for the Carp angler.
I once spent a day landing double figure Carp catches on it. The clutch on the Baitrunner is absolutely the smoothest have ever used. Once I saw a carp roll at around 100yds, with my Baitrunner the rig and bait flew out to the fish, 5 minutes later I landed the carp. I could never have caught it with my old tackle.

Anyway I won’t go on now, get yourself a Shimano Baitrunner reel, you simply must add one of these to your Carp fishing tackle.

What Type Baits Should I Use for Carp Fishing?
This is a common question usually asked by new Carp fishermen. What type of bait should I use? In my experience, any bait you can get to the bottom of your fishing hole will work; worms, minnows (usually dead), corn, and a variety of dough baits. Of these mentioned corn works the best followed by clean smelling dough baits.

Carp generally just suck around on the bottom of lakes and rivers so anything you can get down there has potential to work. They are much like catfish in that sense. Finding bait for carp is easy. If you don’t want to get your fingers messy, then go to your favourite grocer and buy a can of corn. Sweet corn seems to work the best for me.
You can even use plain white bread with a little water to make dough. I however, like to make my own dough bait by combining a ratio of 2:1 flour to cornmeal or Bisquick to cornmeal, mix with water or milk until a dough ball forms, cover and chill in your refrigerator until use.

If you really want to be adventurous, use milk and one egg, mix and set outside covered for a day or two ahead of time. The mixture will sour a bit and be more aromatic. Add more Bisquick or flour as needed until dough just stops sticking to your fingers.
That is all there is to it. Here is one final tip. Take additional flour or Bisquick with you fishing. As the dough ball warms up it may acquire condensation and become sticky. Just kneed a pinch in with the dough you will put on your hook and you will be fine.
Good luck and happy fishing!
